The principles of green holidays

Green holidays are – obviously – based on a principle of carbon neutrality to reduce its negative impact on the environment and preserve the planet. There are several principles that govern ecological holidays and these are not particularly binding. It is possible to adopt all these principles gradually to better acclimatize to the changes of the green holidays.

  • Favor less polluting transport: train, coach, carpooling, etc.
  • Limit the use of the plane: non-stop journey and respect of the ratio between the distance traveled and the duration of the stay, that is to say that one hour of flight is equivalent to one day of vacation on the place
  • Use mobile apps and websites that recommend vacation spots eco-responsible.
  • Check the different labels of vacation spots on French territory
  • Give preference to hotels, lodges or campsites committed to an environmental approach, certified by the Ecolabel European, for example
  • Reduce the weight of luggage and bring only what is necessary
  • Use sun milks instead of oils which form a screen on the surface of the water and slow down the photosynthesis of underwater plants

Ecological holidays require a real investment and the adoption of eco-responsible behavior to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint. The French Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe) has published a complete guide on its site for spending ecological holidays.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the circulation of the virus, French people will not be able to cross borders easily except for a compelling reason such as a family or professional obligation. At the moment, borders with non-European countries remain closed until further notice. This unprecedented situation is absolutely not conducive to travel except within French territory.
