During a trip to Madagascar, at sunrise, the fishing village wakes up. The light bathes the sleeping faces of my brothers and sisters. We gather on our nighttime mat, a square of sail on the ground. The cool morning welcomes the southern morning stars.

Today, we are enthusiastically preparing to set sail. We will deploy our nets near the drop-off to capture the barracudas. The sea is our companion, our source of life. Every trip to the sea is crucial for our survival, and the last few days have been disappointing, without the slightest catch of a big fish.

Inasmuch as “Vezo”, we are closely linked to marine resources. However, these resources are inexorably depleting. Lagoon destruction, unsustainable fishing practices, warming waters and pollution are reducing our fishing potential. We face unprecedented challenges.

We aspire to positive change, to the rebirth of our oceans. Restoring past abundance requires collective action and general awareness in favor of marine preservation. Guided by the wisdom of our ancestors, we commit ourselves with dedication and perseverance.

The sea is our nourishing mother, our sacred connection with nature. We work to preserve this precious heritage, balance our vital needs and the conservation of the oceans. Every day we send heartfelt prayers to our ancestors, begging for successful fishing and the restoration of marine ecosystems.

To preserve our common future, we must act in a concerted manner, becoming aware of the vital importance of preserving marine resources. Thus, we are launching a global appeal to join us, preserve our way of life and guarantee the survival of “Vezo”. Let us join forces to protect the richness and diversity of the oceans, for present and future generations.

We know the challenge is daunting, but we are determined to continue our fight for the survival of our community and our marine ecosystem. Ready to make lasting changes to our fishing practices, we collaborate with international organizations and scientists for effective conservation strategies.

As custodians of the sea, we protect our maritime heritage. Together, we can restore balance, preserve biodiversity and ensure a prosperous future for generations to come. Join this noble cause, so that our children and grandchildren live in harmony with the sea that surrounds us. During a trip to Madagascar, you can contribute to this conservation and safeguarding effort.
