LE KABARY
From a very young age, I have been amazed by eloquent people, whether in gesture or in speech. To me, they are wise and learned.
For any event, the Malagasy never departs from these sessions of oratory contests between two or more parties. This is called Kabary or by other names in other regions of the island.
The word Kabary comes from the word of Arabic origin "kabar" which means "speech". But the Kabary is not an ordinary speech, because it is an oratorical form, pronounced aloud, illustrated with cons, proverbs and maxims in order to charm an audience.
In its literary form, the Kabary makes it possible to keep and safeguard the language and the specifically Malagasy terms, especially those unusual in everyday life, such as proverbs and maxims.
In Malagasy society, the kabary is linked to important life events, such as birth, marriage, death, etc. The cultural value of kabary is important in Madagascar and deserves to be preserved.
The person who recites a kabary is a "mpikabary" or "one who does the kabary". This person is a convincing and trustworthy character within the society. She must have an oratorical talent and be able to express colorful, attractive, highlighted, captivating ideas, corresponding to realities and events and respecting the habits and customs as well as the social values which are of great importance in the Malagasy kabary.
Kabary is one of the pillars, guardians of the oral and written linguistic tradition. No event could take place without a dignified and distinguished kabary.
