Biodiversity of MadagascaR: The dream brookokesia

In the abundant universe of Malagasy biodiversity, a recent discovery has captured scientists and enthusiasts of nature. A new species of chameleon, the Brookesia Nofy, was highlighted in the private reserve of Akanin’ny Nofy, nestled sixty kilometers from Toamasina, on the east coast of Madagascar. This miniature reptile, which measures only 33 millimeters, is distinguished by its discreet look and its essential role in the local ecosystem.

The Brookesia Nofy belongs to the family of “fellow chameleons”, thus nicknamed for their pale shade and their mimetic appearance which makes them almost invisible among the dead leaves of the forest. This specimen was initially identified unexpectedly thanks to photographs taken by tourists exploring the reserve. These pictures then drew the attention of researchers who decided to deepen the study of this mysterious animal. Under the supervision of Miguel Vences, of the Technical University of Brunswick in Germany, an international team of biologists, including the Malagasy Andolalao Rakotoarison and Alida Frankline Hasiniaina, confirmed the existence of this species and undertakes detailed analyzes to understand the Specificities.

This chameleon alone illustrates the exceptional wealth of Madagascar, often described as “biodiversity sanctuary”. The island is home to a staggering proportion of endemic species, not found anywhere else in the world. The discovery of Brookesia Nofy reinforces this reputation, while highlighting the fragility of Malagasy ecosystems. These microhabitats, often threatened by deforestation and human activity, require special attention to guarantee the survival of such unique species.

With its mysteries and wonders, Madagascar continues to surprise the scientific world and nature lover. This discovery demonstrates the crucial role that private nature reserves play in the preservation of local fauna and flora.
