Departure for the Massif des TSINGY DE L'ANKARANA
200 million years ago, this region was buried under the sea.
Corals and shells piled up and welded together for years, forming an immense plate that rose up and rose out of the sea.
Now in the open air, the limestone has cracked to form joints and canyons as well as sharp peaks. “Tsingy” means “to walk on tiptoe”.
The slightly acidic rainwater then began a long process of erosion both on the surface and in depth where it dug galleries decorated with concretions.
Ankarana has the most extensive network of underground caves in Madagascar which measures approximately 120 km. These underground erosions shelter royal tombs, where the kings and the Antakarana population took refuge during the various inter-ethnic conflicts of the 19th century.
Despite its chaotic and rough appearance, Ankarana contains unique species of fauna and flora capable of satisfying the most demanding enthusiasts and thus presents exceptional tourist interest.
This is the 2nd site in Madagascar, after the Bemaraha Massif, where we can see these Tsingy.
